The Atlantic Coast of France and the Dunes of Pilat

The Atlantic Coast of France is lovely as most coasts are, however this coast is different in that it has the famous Pilat Dunes, the largest dunes in Europe. They stand 100 meters high and 500 meters wide.

The Stone Buildings of Dordogne, France

Dordogne has ancient architecture and buildings. Some date back to the first millennium AD, and some are even older than that. I especially found the stone buildings, many with circular roofs, marvelous. The roofs stay up purely by balance and layering and do not use any mortar. Even the golden stone gite we stayed in near La Bugue dated back to the 1600's. Enjoy these stone monuments and maisons of Dordogne.

Dordogne and the Bordeaux Regions, France - More Favorite Photos

Continuing my West France theme of Dordogne and the surrounding regions, here are photos of Saint-Emilion, a Medieval city now known for its exceptional wine from the vineyards of the area. The city is an UNESCO World Heritage site, which I think is primarily based on the 'underground city' in Saint-Emilion. We spent an afternoon visiting the area, including the underground city and the Clos de Madeleine Winery outside of the town. Here are a few photos of the day.

Dordogne, France - Some of My Favorite Photos of the Area

A few months back we visited Dordogne. I went primarily to see the ancient cave paintings but I was very surprised at the beauty and history of the region. Every turn of the river was a spectacular Medieval castle and beautiful landscapes. The history, dating back 12,000 years, was fascinating. Here are a few of my favorite photos of the trip.
