We had lunch at the Taco Real Restaurant in Sintra. It was recommended in both of our tour books. The food was excellent and reasonably priced and the restaurant was a small palace built into the rock so the atmosphere was lovely. Here are the photos:

Sintra is a small town 40 minutes by train outside of Lisbon. It is an ancient town with a fantastic Sintra National Palace (the best preserved Medieval Royal Palace in Portugal) in the center, and a 8th or 9th Century Moorish castle on the hill (a 45 minute walk straight up the mountain). There's also a fairytale-like Romanticist palace on top of the opposite mountain called the Pena National Palace. Here are photos of the town of Sintra.

On the coast, a 30 minute tram ride from Lisbon, is the town of Belem. The sights to see there include the Monastery, the National Museum, and two monuments which site on the river that runs through Belem. Here are photos of the monastery, the castle and the monument commemorating Portugal's discovery of new lands in the late 1400's.
